An Update on Tim DeChristopher

About a year ago I wrote a post on Tim DeChristopher, a brave young activist who was sentenced to two years in prison for disrupting an oil and gas auction. In an act of civil disobedience, he submitted winning bids on land in Utah with no intention of paying for them.

An update on his status is provided by Peter Scheer on Truthdig. As well, there is a link on the site to an interview of DeChristopher that Chris Hedges conducted in 2011.

Worthwhile reading for those seeking examples of principled behaviour in these times.

  1. Tim DeChristopher is one of the best (though sad) individual stories I've come across in the last two years. Certainly, the film rights have been scooped by some enlightened filmmaker. Look for this incredibly strong young man to rocket into the mass public consciousness.. and certainly as an intensely polarizing figure. Its truly incredible that the American Justice system fumbled his case due to interference, cronyism and political malfeasance... Payback will be intense though.. Whew ! What a hero of environment ! We need hundreds like him..

  2. It is stories like his that are so important to us, Salamander. To be reminded that there are people in the world who behave selflessly and with integrity is a potent antidote to the kind of selfish individuality that is preached by so many these days.
