An Excellent Policy Initiative

Although perhaps less than perfect, New York state has taken a bold move in promising free college/university tuition for its residents whose families earn less than $100,000 per year. This will allow many more to secure higher education than would be possible without the bill; upwards of 80% of families will qualify.

Ontario has also promised some tuition relief for low-income families, but the details are still rather vague.

Anything that provides a little light during these exceedingly dark times is to be welcomed:

  1. One hundred years ago, governments decided that the state should fund high school, Lorne. We're finally getting around to the idea that it should do the same thing for post secondary education.

  2. It's certainly a big start in the right direction provided that the graduates don't spend the four years after graduation flipping burgers. Germany offers tuition-free university even to foreign students which has been a big draw for US students. Now, when will our provinces come into the 21st century?

    1. It seems that Europe has many more progressive ideas than North America, Mound. Being abroad certainly helped me gain some perspective.
